GOOD HEADING, GREAT ARTICLE.

By On 22:02
The heading of your essay determines whether your readers should read or abandon your work.
Fine head good article

A kickass essay with an interesting heading would probably draw greater traffic than a good essay with a kickass heading.
Headings should be easy to distinguish from text. One way to make them stand out is to set them in larger and bolder print.

   Our Plan for the Future
At Miller Textiles, we are anticipating many changes in the market, such as…

As in the above example, the first paragraph after a heading does not need to be indented.
Uppercase and Lowercase Letters

Headings set in all capital letters are commanding but difficult to read.

   OUR PLAN FOR THE FUTURE

Use all capitals only if all of your headings are short, and you want to make them very prominent.

Usually a better choice is to set headings in a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters known as title case, in which the first letter of every word except for articles, conjunctions, and prepositions of fewer than five letters is set as a capital.

   Our Plan for the Future

Another option popular with contemporary designers is to set headings in sentence case. In this style, only the first word and any proper nouns in a heading are capitalized.

   Our plan for the future

In addition to being the most readable style, it also can give a heading a modern, casual feel.
Punctuation

If a heading appears on a line of its own, you do not need to add a period after it even if it is a complete sentence. If the heading is a question or an exclamation, though, it should end in a question mark or an exclamation point.

   The Future is Here
But: What Will the Future Bring?
   The Future is Coming!

If a heading is run into the next line of text, you should use a period to separate it from the words that follow.

Our Plan for the Future. At Miller Textiles, we are anticipating many changes in the market, such as…

Length of Lines

A heading does not need to run the entire length of a page or column. A narrower heading is usually more visually appealing and is likely to have more impact.

A long heading may take up more than one line. Try to make the lines of near equal length. For readability, however, avoid placing a line break in the middle of a phrase.

   Awkward:
   Anticipating Changes in
   the Textile Market

   Better:
   Anticipating Changes
   in the Textile Market.

Titles of Works

In text the title of a creative work—such as a book, painting, or movie—is styled to distinguish it from the surrounding words. Most words in the title are capitalized, and the title as a whole is either set in italics or enclosed within quotation marks.

Capitalization of Titles

Always capitalize the first letter of the first and last word in a title. Articles, coordinating conjunctions, the to in infinitives, and prepositions of less than five letters are lowercase; all other words should be capitalized. A preposition should be capitalized if it functions as part of a verb.

   Barefoot in the Park
   How to Write Short Stories
   Getting Out

In long titles that include punctuation, capitalize any word that follows a punctuation mark, such as a colon used to separate a title and subtitle.

   Jackson Pollock: An American Saga

Italicized Titles

The titles of the following works are set in italic type:
books (including poetry collections and anthologies of short stories and essays) magazines newspapers book-length poems plays movies (including made-for-TV movies and animated movies) television series radio shows operas and other long musical compositions record albums ballets and modern dance pieces paintings, sculptures, and other works of art

Titles in Quotation Marks

The titles of these works are set in roman type within quotation marks:
newspaper articles magazine articles essays short stories short poems television episodes songs comic strips

Articles at the Beginning of Titles

If a title begins with a, an, or the and follows a possessive, omit the article to improve the flow of the sentence.

Incorrect: The professor assigned Thomas Paine’s The Age of Reason.
Correct: The professor assigned Thomas Paine’s Age of Reason.

Titles After Prepositions

Do not italicize a title after a preposition if the words of the title function as the preposition’s object.
Incorrect: Darwin’s book on theOrigin of Species…
Acceptable: Darwin’s book on the origin of species
   Better: Darwin’s Origin of Species…

Why you should always use foreign words
One main reason is how it spices your write up. Combination of different foreign words in a composite manner gives a good taste to your readers. But care should still be taken as compounding it with foreign words can also kill your readers interest as well.

REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BECOME A WRITER AND FOCUS MORE ON WRITING

By On 20:08
Natural judgment will say that being able to write and write well is an essential skill for all ages. But apart from this, there are important reasons why you should become a writer and write well as well.
Aside from the fact that writing is one of the inescapable part of everyday life, here are hefty reasons why you should become a writer and make writing a hobby.

Writing Enhance Your Communication Skills

daily writing enhance your communication skills. In this culture, communication is so often hampered because we don’t know how to express ourselves, whether it be verbal or written. Writing regularly can hone the skill of self-expression, something that is useful in written communications such as email, and that can translate into improved verbal communication.  If you have trouble communicating what you want or asking tough questions, regular writing will give you a mind for structuring words quickly to achieve the desired affect in a diplomatic way. Becoming a writer therefore ipso facto enhance your communication skills.

Writing is hyper-important

Why writing is important

  • Writing is the primary basis upon which your work, your learning, and your intellect will be judged—in college, in the workplace, and in the community.
  • Writing expresses who you are as a person.
  • Writing is portable and permanent. It makes your thinking visible.
  • Writing helps you move easily among facts, inferences, and opinions without getting confused—and without confusing your reader.
  • Writing promotes your ability to pose worthwhile questions.
  • Writing fosters your ability to explain a complex position to readers, and to yourself.
  • Writing helps others give you feedback.
  • Writing helps you refine your ideas when you give others feedback.
  • Writing requires that you anticipate your readers’ needs. Your ability to do so demonstrates your intellectual flexibility and maturity.
  • Writing ideas down preserves them so that you can reflect upon them later.
  • Writing out your ideas permits you to evaluate the adequacy of your argument.
  • Writing stimulates you to extend a line of thought beyond your first impressions or gut responses.
  • Writing helps you understand how truth is established in a given discipline.
  • Writing equips you with the communication and thinking skills you need to participate effectively in democracy.
  • Writing is an essential job skill.
With regards to the above importance, it is then a great choice to become a writer.

Writing is critical to being a good reader.

Well the both are colinear in relationship. You are a good writer if you are a good reader .

Most importantly

Writers are real earners.

As far as making money online is concerned, writing is the primary work that earns real money online. Most internet businesses are mainly writing. The most attention gaining freelance work is writing. Contest writers are needed in every business or company.
Therefore writers then are real money earners.

Stage fright; how it affect writers.

By On 14:10
You might have heard or experienced stage fright when you are delivering a formal speech. I know what your question would be now, WHAT HAVE STAGE FRIGHT TO DO WITH WRITING?     my answer to your question is
Stage fright
Stage fright has many things to do with a writer.

 What exactly is stage fright

Stage fright or performance anxiety is the anxiety, fear, or persistent phobia which may be aroused in an individual by the requirement to perform in front of an audience, whether actually or potentially. In the context of public speaking, this may precede or accompany participation in any activity involving public self-presentation.

Who can it affect.

Stage fright may be observed in people of all experiences and backgrounds, from those who are completely new to being in front of an audience to those who have done so for years. It is commonly known among everyday people and may, for example, affect their confidence in job interviewsIt also affects actors, comedians, musicians, and politicians. Many people with no other problems in communication can experience stage fright, but some people with chronic stage fright also have social anxiety or social phobia which are chronic feelings of high anxiety in any social situation. Stage fright can also be seen in school situations, like stand up projects and class speeches.
It could just affect anybody.

Famous people who had been affected by stage fright

Many famous people have had stage fright and were able to overcome their problem. Such stars as Al Jolson, Brian Wilson, Virginia O'Brien, Michael Gambon, Lorde, Jason Alexander, Mose Allison, Maya Angelou, David Brenner,Peter Coyote, Olympia Dukakis, Richard Lewis, Barbra Streisand, AdeleNiall HoranFrankie HowerdMariah Carey,Amanda Seyfried and many more have dealt with performance anxiety.
In some cases, famous stars have struggled to cope with their anxiety.Hugh Grant said on starring in the movieMusic and Lyrics that he "did the whole film full of lorezepam.

HOW DOES IT AFFECT WRITERS

In my explanations, I focused mainly on how it affected speakers. My post is titled how it affect writers. Then if you are a writer or it's your first time writing you sometimes feel stage fright in a way you wouldn't instantly understand that it is stage fright.

Take for instance

When you are set to write what you know very well, then at the time you forget the exact template to your work. Well, you may call it a bloc; but my brother or sister you just experienced stage fright.

It is always as

  • Experiencing a block
  • Forgetting important parts of your write up
  • Inclusion of facts that are irrelevant to your context
  • Shaky and sweaty hands that affects your normal calligraphy.
  • Little facts to support your work.
  • Blank page syndrome

Experiencing writer block

Writer's block is a condition, primarily associated with writing, in which an author loses the ability to produce new work or experiences a creative slowdown. The condition ranges in difficulty from coming up with original ideas to being unable to produce a work for years. Throughout history, writer's block has been a documented problem. When you notice this, brother sister you are experiencing stage fright for writers.

Blank page syndrome

Blank page syndrome is similar to writer's block, but is not a psychological term. It can happen to a writer at any point in time, irrespective of their career success. This syndrome can be very irksome to authors and often leads to a long span of time where they cannot come up with anything new. Coping strategies include: distracting oneself from the piece for a while, reading a book, and forcing oneself to write something even if it makes no sense. To avoid blank page syndrome, it is best to have an idea when one sits down to write, and to keep from procrastinating because stress only worsens the blank page syndrome.

I HOPE THAT FROM NOW YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE STAGE FRIGHT. check out coping strategies.

Jargon

By On 16:19

Jargon is vocabulary used exclusively by a particular group, such as the members of a profession or a subculture. Although jargon sometimes communicates new ideas, it also serves to separate people inside the group from people outside of it. By its very definition, jargon is only understood by a select few and is therefore usually not the most effective tool available to you for communicating your ideas.

Medicine, law, education, the military, the entertainment world, and most academic disciplines have their own jargons. The jargons of bureaucracy and business, however, are probably the most widespread and are thus the jargons many people know best and are most tempted to use.

In many business settings, using jargon is almost required, but you should try to avoid it as much as possible. While some of your colleagues may see jargon as the badge of true insider, many others will regard it as pretentious, smug, and evidence of a lazy mind.

The list below includes examples of business jargon that have been resoundingly derided in recent years.

What is a slang

By On 16:15

The word slang is applied to informal words and phrases of the most recent vintage. Like most innovations, slang expressions are often fresh and exciting—hence the temptation many writers feel to use them to add energy to their work.

Unfortunately, the strengths of slang terms are directly related to their weaknesses as communication tools. Because slang is so new, the broader your audience, the more likely your readers will be unfamiliar with the meaning of a slang expression. If your audience is multicultural or multigenerational, the probability rises that slang you find provocative will be little more than gibberish to the people reading your work. Despite its appeal, slang is usually best left out of written documents, both informal and formal.

The list below includes some commonly heard words and phrases that are widely considered to be slang.

   badmouth
   bean counter
   big bucks
   bigwig
   bush-league

Word choice when writing

By On 16:12

Word Choice

When you speak, your expression, a hand gesture, or the inflection of your voice can say nearly as much as your words. In written documents, however, words alone must convey every nuance of meaning. Only by selecting your words thoughtfully and purposefully can you be sure that your readers will truly understand what you intend to say.

Factors to consider in your word choice for your context

The list below offers eight factors worth considering whenever you are trying to choose the right word for a particular context.

Conciseness

Some writers make the mistake of believing that the more words they use, the more authority their writing will have. In fact, no readers appreciate having to wade through wordy prose. They tend to give much more weight to economical writing, in which the presence of every word can be justified. (See Wordy Phrases for more information.)

Connotation

Be alert to not only a word’s denotation (dictionary definition) but also its connotation—the set of ideas that is associated with it. For instance, psychiatric hospital andmadhouse are synonyms, but the former conjures up an image of an organized institution while the latter suggests a den of chaos and squalor.

Familiarity

A word may communicate your meaning exactly, but if your readers have never heard it before, it is obviously not a good choice. Although you cannot know the exact range of your readers’ vocabulary, you can usually make some assumptions about their familiarity with many words. A common foreign phrase, for instance, will likely be understood by a doctoral candidate but leave a junior high school student baffled. The same student may have no trouble with a slang expression that would be meaningless to someone from another country. If you suspect that your audience could be unfamiliar with a word, use a more universally known synonym instead.

Formality

You would naturally use a different vocabulary in a note to your best friend than in a memo to your company’s president. The reason has to do with levels of formality. Your friend would expect you to use informal language and slang. The same words, however, might make the company president question whether you take your job seriously enough. Determining the proper level of formality is sometimes difficult. If in doubt, err on the side of formality: Standard words and proper grammar and punctuation are unlikely to offend any reader. (See Informal Words and Phrases and Slang for a discussion of when informal language is appropriate.)

Freshness

Your readers’ attention is likely to stray if you litter your work with too many overused words or phrases. Keep your writing fresh by trying to find new ways of saying things instead of relying on trite expressions. (See Clichés for examples of phrases to be avoided.)

Precision

Avoid using vague words. Writing, for example, that a lecture was “interesting” is to say little.Entertaining, informative, orcontroversial are all better choices because these adjectives provide more precise information. When choosing between synonyms, think carefully about the small ways in which their definitions differ, and select the word that most closely fits your meaning.

Simplicity

Almost always, the simplest word or phrase you can use to make a point is the best. Simple language is likely to be understood by the broadest possible audience. It also has the advantage of never seeming mannered or pretentious.

Sound

Even when reading silently, you are sensitive to the sound of words. You hear in your head the way combinations of vowels and consonants flow together. A group of short words will make you read quickly, but you will instinctively slow down when you encounter a series of multisyllabic ones. Be conscious of the rhythm of your prose: Sometimes it will dictate which word from a group of synonyms will have the greatest impact in your work.

Good work shows powerful use of good and contextual word choice. Remember this always.

How to know when you are inspired to write

When inspiration to write comes they are certain reactions within you that shows it's time you start writing.
  • When an idea keep recurring in your memory. This time it looks like you are normally brainstorming but in reality you are never set to write any stuff. It would always come randomly in erratic stream of ideas flow.
  • When you feel like you want to tell a story but in reality there is no real audience to say your topic to. During this time if you can't control yourself the prepare to answer a soliloquizer. It is uncontrolled as the feelings to communicate your stuff grows hydraheaded. Once something like this happens know that you are inspired already.
  • When you finds out you are constantly asking questions about a certain topic. You have already started calling to view your iinspiration to write.

What to do when you notice you are inspired to write

Start of immediately.Follow the writing stages aptly. Start with the prewriting stage, write down every random ideas as they randomly occur to you. Don't get carried away by the continuity in your memory flow. Make every point you write down as brief as possible so that it won't compromise other randomly occurring entries. Read writing great to brush up on your Spanish.

A paragraph can be described as a group of related sentences that develop a unit of thought within an essay. It is set off by the concept of indentation in the first line. Subsequent lines begin with a margin. A paragraph might contain a topic sentence, while quite often the introduction paragraph may contain thesis statement.         The topic sentence States the main ideas in a paragraph.
It may occur at the beginning, middle or end of the paragraph. It often comes with associated phrases and sentences to form the paragraph.

Topic sentence in medial position
   Ref example ("DUST")
Recently, I was expecting a visit from friends who had never been to my house. So I decided to clean at least the surface of all the rooms they'd see. As I moved from room to room surveying the job I was amazed at the amount of dust every where I looked. Under the beds and surfaces I found huge dust balls. My rarely used dining room table was covered with a fine gray film that I could write in. Some of my window sills were coated with a darker, grittier substance. By the time I started upstairs, I was noticing dust in the heating grate, dust on mouldings, and even dust cycling to old spider webs.
The topic sentence above is italicized. It is medially located.
Topic sentence at the terminal position
Ref example, Enugu: a fascinating city
It is easy to remember when one is driving into the coal city through the famous mines. The first flyover announces the entry as one joins the fast-moving human and vehicular traffic into the centre of the town. People can be seen from all sides of the road, flashing smiles and exchanging greetings. The bustling and jostling continue all through the day under the blazing sun. At dawn, the blazing sun is replaced by the warm gentle breeze from the hills.
Enugu is indeed a fascinating city.
Here the last sentence is the topic sentence

Structuring the essay

By On 13:39

Structure means how something is arranged or organized. The essay has three parts namely: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.

The introduction

Introduction as the name implies gives the insight to what you're writing about. The introduction should be captivating to keep your readers interest. A good beginning makes a good end.
Take for example; this example will appeal to you and my gain is your enthusiastic interest. Check out this example.
         Starting school
Starting school was like being a child in the middle of a candy shop. Everywhere I turned, I found an exotic treat, something I wanted to taste. But I couldn't taste everything much less consume it all. A child who eats too much candy develops a stomach ache. A student who joins too many clubs has too little time for course work, and must suffer the pain of low grades.

This intro would captivate your readers with their view to finding out what you latter did starting school. There will same time clear their suspense

The body(middle).

The body of the essay is the real content. It involves the development of main ideas related to the introduction. Thus, the body of the write up is made up of paragraphs which deal with the major points raised in the outline.
You are advised to use inter paragraph transition markers to alert the reader of the movement of your topic or ideas. Some transition markers for development of the body of the essay in paragraph include:
Secondly, next, finallyor you could use this other enumeration method: one way is .............., A second factor is..... Etc

The conclusion (End)

Here, you are required to conclude major points in the preceding paragraphs as whereas the introduction sets the pace and tone of your essay, the conclusion clinches the points made in previous paragraphs. The conclusion takes different forms depending on the topic at issue. It may be a summary of main points discussed. In this case, you are safer if you use synonyms to avoid a mere rehash.
You can evaluate the main points discussed in order to show their importance. You could use a quotation to clinch the main points raised. The conclusion could be in the form of a rhetorical question which the essay had already answered etc.
Example:
Looking critically at my case, don't you think it wasn't easy starting school? Conclusion to starting school

                WRITING STAGES

Pre-writing stage:

this stage involves brainstorming and outlining. When you brainstorm, you stimulate your brain to yield all knowledge that has been accumulated over time from observations, experience, reading, research, discussion, seminars/symposia etc. When you generate ideas during brainstorming, ensure that it you jot them down as they occur to you.
Then you set about to outline the ideas, fact, and other information earlier jotted down randomly during brainstorming. Outline is a formal plan of an essay. It is normally numbered in such a logical sequence as would that major points and their supporting ideas are sequentially arranged.

Writing stage.

Here you make a draft in continuous prose of ideas outlined in the prewriting stage. As your draft develops, you may get free insight into the topic, in which case you are required to continue injecting these new ideas and dropping the irrelevant ones.

Rewriting stage

This is the final stage of your writing where you are advised to painstakingly edit your draft with a view to improving your skill.  Read your draft quite slowly and watch out for the meaning of each sentence, clause or phrase. It is here that you are opportune to check all grammatical mistakes, faulty parallism, annoying shifts, and faulty     subject verb association or matching. It is equally of importance that you work to eliminate mechanical inaccuracies such as spelling mistakes, inaccurate use of the punctuation marks, etc.  Then you can rewrite your essay and confidently present it to the most critical of readers.
